Deer Hunting Safety Tips
The hunting season is what every hunter looks forward to. During this time hunters are full of anxiety, waiting patiently to shoot their target. Even though the hunting season is full of fun for those who like outdoor games, it is important that you take safety as the top priority. Just like the saying: prevention is better than cure.
Here are some deer hunting safety tips that can ensure a hunting trip with no danger.
The Safety Tips
- Your firearm is one of the important gears for hunting, and you need to be careful with it. You should point the barrel of your firearm in a safe direction. In fact, it is most times advisable that you keep your gun unloaded when you are not using it. One mistake most people do is relying on the safety of their gun. You should treat every firearm as if they are loaded.
- Use the right ammunition. Since there are lots of slug guns available, choosing the proper one should be a priority. Also, when you purchase the best scope together with your slug gun, you will minimize the probability of any danger you could encounter while hunting.
- Ensure there are no obstacles in front of your or between you and your target before firing any shot. Also, handle your slug gun with care when it fails to fire.
- Before you drive a vehicle, jump a ditch, jump a fence, climb a tree, or stand, ensure your gun is not loaded.
- While handling a firearm before or during deer hunting, ensure you don’t use drugs or alcohol.
- Always protect your eye and ear. It will help protect your eye from any irritation and your ear from the sound of a gunshot which many people don’t always find comfort.
- When going out for hunting, it is the best you wear clothes with bright colors such as orange. Also, if you are the type that takes your dog along with you ensure it also wears a color that is obvious so it can easily be seen from a distance.
- Do not keep your ammunition and guns together. Ensure you keep them in a locked storage
- Allow weather to determine the dress you wear. The dress you put on when the weather is cold should be thick and able to shake off the chilly weather. On the other hand, when the weather is hot, you need to put on something that allows air to penetrate and cool the body.
- GPS or compass is very important especially if you are hunting at a particular location for the first time. When you have either of the two, it will prevent you from getting lost.
- Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. You can tell a friend, family or neighbor. If you would be moving to another location before returning, then tell someone. This will help them alert the security as soon as possible if you don’t return on time.
- If you are going before or after daylight, ensure you carry torchlight. You would be able to see any danger around and possibly avoid it.
- Don’t go and hunt in areas you don’t know anything about. Ensure you are familiar with the area before going there to hunt.
- Ensure you carry a first aid kit with you. It will help you take care of any wounds or injury that might occur while hunting before you get to the hospital.
- If you are going to hunt from a tree stand, ensure the tree you are using is healthy and alive. Be sure there are no traces of damage or rot.
- Use a high-quality and secure safety harness. Remember, all it takes is one fall to get injured or even end your career as a hunter.
- Always inspect your safety harness, ladder steps, and tree stand to be sure everything is secured to the tree tightly.
- If possible hunt with a friend and ensure you take a communication device along. It can be a walkie-talkie or cell phone.
- Beware of places that can lead to injury. It is advisable that you don’t rush. Whether you are walking or climbing the tree make it slow and steady. You will be able to know places that are slippery and dangerous.
